Halloween 2026: Day 29

The Devouring Time by Jordan L. Hawk (Widdershins Universe #1)

A rare books dealer gets caught up in a mystery involving amnesia, sorcery, and tainted alcohol. The fact that it was originally a Patreon serial with audience voting on character actions does shine through a few times, but there are interesting thematic resonances between that format and the plot so I guess it works out in the end.

Spoilers…

A variant on the Great Race of Yith, but less interesting. I mostly enjoyed the book, and maybe there will be a sequel about destroying or resurrecting the egregore (I’m not entirely sure which action is correct, which makes it potentially more interesting than the Swarm.)
