Beware! The Blob

“We’ll have to moisten you a little bit.”

In this sequel to The Blob the filmmakers have discovered the concept of entertainment, but haven’t quite grasped how to provide it. Instead we get endless scenes of attempted jokes delivered by what might as well be aliens given how explicable their affect is, weird insinuations of sex, and a blob that likes to encroach gradually into the corner of the frame like it’s being lifted into place by a PA.

It manages to be worse than the original, which took some doing.

“Dinosaurs ruled our planet for millions of years and yet they died out almost overnight. Why? The evidence suggests that a meteor fell to Earth carrying an alien bacteria.”

Surprisingly good, given the antecedents. It has moments of tension, and horror, and even (on occasion) actual humor recognizable to humans. It’s still far from perfect, but it gets bonus points for making Meg a self-actualized character who accomplishes things.

Finally, the truth is revealed: that huge dark secret you thought you needed to hide from the world lest it absolutely destroy you isn’t a big deal at all, what’s actually harming you is your inability to be emotionally vulnerable and honest.
