Halloween 2025: Day 1

Spooky season begins!

Alien: Romulus

“Forgive me. I’ve been nothing but a burden to you. Today, I can finally help. And you won’t see me as a child anymore.”

I’m afraid I can’t forgive the terrible, terrible fake Ian Holm. It’s a glaring distraction every time he’s on screen, and is just the most egregious of several unnecessary callbacks that detract from the film. Fede Álvarez clearly cares a lot about the Alien franchise, but the sheer number of easter eggs would probably have been irritating all on its own, and several of them land with a clang.

With fifteen to thirty minutes of fat trimmed out and a real actor instead of a stupid stunt resurrection this could be in the running for third-best Alien film, but I think what we actually got slots in below AvP and only slightly above Prometheus.
