Halloween 2024: Day 23

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer

“This island didn’t have a murder rate until you people showed up!”

Weak followup. Julie’s new friends are terrible people who suck to be around, and are constantly pushing her to cheat on her boyfriend with rando new guy for no apparent reason. They push her boundaries, tell her “no means yes,” and are just all around bad vibes.

In order to get the plot of the movie to happen Ray, who’s planning to propose to Julie, won’t commit to going on a trip with her so that when he fails to show up due to murder she’s not even worried.

Way higher body count for no apparent reason. In the first movie all of the victims were at least vaguely tied to our central characters who had wronged the murderer (and I thought even then he was targeting too many), but this time he’s just killing anyone he comes across.

It tries to replicate the end of the first movie but here it makes no sense.

The Apocalypse Box

Keep Britain British.

This had a lot of potential, but it rushes into the scenario instead of taking its time letting you get to know the characters, so there’s not much impact when the inevitable happens.

It also introduces a deadline (midnight) and then gives you no sense of the passage of time. There are no visible clocks, there’s no chyron after a cut, the characters don’t tell each other the time, nothing.

It also fumbles the very last twist by giving it no payoff and no apparent tie to the rules that we’ve spent the entire movie establishing.

Still kind of worth watching (for the credits scene with Paul Foot if nothing else), but I wanted it to be better.
