Halloween 2023: Day 33
The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna
Whether this is cute or twee is very much in the eye of the beholder, but I don’t think anyone will disagree with me calling the plot underbaked and the characters broadly sketched. It’s not a terrible read, but I wanted more substance and less candyfloss. (I also hated a particular plot twist.) ⭐⭐

Cosmic horror with a side of comedy and a soupçon of postmodernism. Having now seen Phantasm I’m not surprised Coscarelli wanted to adapt Jason Pargin’s novel to the screen, nor that the result had a mixed reception.
