A Mankind Witch by Dave Freer (Heirs of Alexandria #1.5)

The Heirs of Alexandria series is an ambitious multi-author alternate history with magic. The mainline books are sprawling narratives thick enough to choke a python, which makes this charming, vaguely Princess-Bride-flavoured side story a bit of a departure and my favourite book in the series.
