Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets

A real mixed bag. Beautiful visuals and world-building, problematic pacing, tepid plot, and uneven performances from the two leads (I predict a lot of reviews with phrases like “a black hole of charisma.")

It’s not Besson at his best (that would be The Fifth Element and Léon: The Professional), but it’s Besson at his freest to bring his vision of a bold scifi epic to the screen; that in itself is enough to make it a fun romp and I’d be happy to watch a sequel.

The opening sequence on its own is worth the price of admission; if you’re nevertheless not planning to see the movie during its theatrical run, make a note to track it down once it’s on home video and watch the first five minutes.
